Summary

BACKGROUND: Malignant melanoma is the cutaneous tumour with the highest degree of malignancy. In Central Europe the incidence has risen up to 10–15 cases per 100 000 inhabitants. Worldwide, this malignancy increases by 6 % every year. METHODS: Review of the literature on the diagnosis and therapy of melanoma. RESULTS: The manuscript presents current classification, diagnosis and therapy modalities of melanoma including sentinel lymph node technique and adjuvant therapy. Depending on tumor invasion depth, 5 year survival ranges from < 60–99 %. CONCLUSIONS: Regular screening of high-risk groups and early excision of suspected tumours contribute to successful management of melanoma.
