Abstract

In this study, the biological control of Pseudomonas savastanoi pv. phaseolicola, which causes halo blight in bean plants, was investigated with bacterial strains isolated from different sources. Fifty-four isolated bacterial strains were identified by fatty acid methyl ester analysis. The nitrogen fixing, phosphorus, potassium and calcium dissolving properties of the strains were determined. It was determined that 11 strains belonging to the genera Bacillus alcalophilus, Bacillus atrophaeus, Bacillus megaterium, Bacillus mycoides, Bacillus subtilis, Lysinibacillus sphaericus, Pseudomonas fluorescens, Pseudomonas putida genera were effective against the pathogen, and that these strains inhibited the development of Psp by forming an inhibition zone varying between 1.97–43.13 mm. It was determined that the application of the strains, that were found to be effective in in vivo testing, to the leaves as a spray, singly and in combination, decreased the development of the disease with an effect of 50.15–75.21% compared to the control group. The results revealed that antagonist bacteria were effective in inhibiting the pathogen growth and could be used in biological control of the disease.
