Abstract

The literature was analysed with different databases to find relations between oxcarbazepine (OXC) und the hormone system. 46 papers between 1989 and 2005 were screened and investigated. The following facts were found: There is a dose-related influence of OXC on the Cytochrome P450 System of the liver (CYP 3A4) and also an effect on the clearance of ovulation suppressing medication. Also there is a dose-dependent effect of OXC on testosterone and sex hormonebinding globulin. Otherwise we could not find any influence of OXC on secretion of antidiuretic hormone, on the lipid metabolism, on growth and body weight. It is unclear, if there are effects of OXC on thyreoid hormones, sexual mutation and reproductive functions.
