Abstract

The poorly known acropomatid fish, Acropoma lecorneti Fourmanoir 1988 was originally described from a single specimen off the west coast of New Caledonia. However, the brief original description and apparent subsequent loss of the holotype made the taxonomic status of the species problematic. A second specimen, collected in good condition from off Okinawa Island, Japan, enabled the species to be redescribed with detailed emphasis on morphological characters. It is easily distinguishable from other species of Acropoma by an O-shaped luminous gland, the slender proximal radial of 1st anal-fin pterygiophore lacking a trough or hollow, and the pale-colored anus located closer to the pelvic-fin origin than to that of the anal fin.
