Abstract
As an essential part of a dynamic system such as a transport vehicle or machine, gear is important to the safety and effective operation of the system. Our developing smart gear system aims to propose a solution for condition monitoring of gear elements. In this system, a resistance sensor antenna pattern is printed on the surface of an operation gear to cover all the potential cracked locations on the gear. A monitoring antenna connected to a network analyzer is placed in parallel to the sensor surface of the operating gear. Magnetic coupling between the monitoring antenna and the conductive track will occur thanks to the conductive track formed by the sensor pattern on gear. This magnetic coupling changes the return loss of the monitoring antenna. Certainly, the condition of the gear will change the physical state of the conductive track of the sensor antenna pattern. Consequently, the magnetic coupling or the return loss data received by the monitoring antenna will be affected. Since the operation gear is not wired to the monitoring antenna, the return loss signal becomes vital data for the condition monitoring technique of gear. This study proposes a Genetic Algorithms (GA) method to estimate the characteristic parameters of the operation gear via only the return loss data. The GA method is based on the data fitting technique. There are two cases and six different coupling conditions that have been considered and extracted their experimental data for the GA method. The results indicate that the natural frequency and Quality (Q) factor of the sensor antenna sintered on the operation gear can be obtained via the GA method and the six sets of identified parameters are also different. The validity of the identified values via the fitness between the simulation return loss data of each set of identified parameters and the experimental return loss data have consolidated the reliability of the proposed GA method.
