Abstract

The organization of teaching electrochemistry for students of various specialities and levels of education (graduate, masters, and postgraduate) at the Belarusian State Technological University (BSTU) is considered. The features of teaching electrochemistry for electrochemists, students of chemico-technological and non-chemical specialities studying at BSTU, are discussed. The benefits of electrochemistry studying for non-electrochemists (both chemico-technological and non-chemical specialities) are presented. The elements of the curriculum for teaching electrochemistry for electrochemists of technological profile are depicted. The examples of enterprises and scientific organizations of Belarus for which electrochemists-technologists work after graduation are shown. The importance of scientific activity of teachers taking electrochemistry and related disciplines for effectiveness of education process is noted. The textbooks usually used at electrochemistry teaching on different education levels are mentioned. This article discusses the challenges encountered in organizing electrochemistry education at BSTU and proposes potential solutions.

Notes

  1. For more information on the advantages of studying electrochemistry for students of other specialities, see [28].

  2. Training of specialists with higher education in the field of electrochemistry, in addition to BSTU, in Belarus is carried out only at the Department of Electrochemistry of the Chemistry Faculty of the Belarusian State University (BSU).

  3. The volume of the electrochemical component of physical and chemical disciplines read for students of different specialties differs, taking into account the curricula, but the thematic content, in general, remains the same, which makes it possible to familiarize students with various sections of electrochemistry, the conceptual, methodological, and instrumental apparatus of which in one form or volume they may need in their future professional activities.

  4. For example, students majoring in specialty of “Technology of Inorganic Substances, Materials and Products” may be offered solutions of inorganic compounds (acids, bases or salts) for research, and students majoring in specialty of “Biotechnology” may be offered solutions of organic electrolytes (acids, etc.).

  5. Electrochemistry is also taught to students of various non-chemical specialties in other institutions of higher education of Belarus, such as BNTU, Belarusian State University of Informatics and Radioelectronics (BSUIR), Belarusian State Agrarian Technical University (BSATU), and others.

  6. This trend is not unique and characteristic only for a particular educational institution, region, and discipline, but, unfortunately, is of a general nature.
