Zusammenfassung
Hintergrund
Abstract
Background
In 2014, 3500 laryngeal carcinomas were newly diagnosed in Germany.
Materials and methods
A selective literature search on risk factors, symptoms, diagnostics, treatment, and aftercare of laryngeal carcinoma was performed in the PubMed database.
Results
The main risk factors for development of laryngeal carcinoma are smoking and alcohol consumption. The incidence of laryngeal carcinoma decreases with a decrease in nicotine consumption, particularly in men. Surgical modalities for laryngeal carcinoma are transoral surgery, open partial laryngectomy, and total laryngectomy. Nonsurgical curative treatment concepts include radiotherapy alone for early laryngeal carcinomas and combined radiochemotherapy with cisplatin for advanced laryngeal carcinomas.
Conclusion
Despite innovations in diagnostics and treatment, the prognosis of patients has not significantly improved in recent decades; therefore, the treatment of laryngeal carcinomas remains an interdisciplinary challenge.
