Abstract

With respect to an enhanced solubility under physiological conditions, a carbohydrate-containing hypericin-based second-generation photosensitizer was prepared. Its photochemical properties were tested by means of the light-sensitized destruction of bilirubin IXα to be even better than those of the parent compound hypericin. Investigations on binding-interactions with DNA showed promising results as well.
