Abstract.
Donnan dialysis has been demonstrated to be a useful technique for the preconcentration and recovery of metal ions. The chemical composition of both the sample and receiver solutions in terms of concentration and ionic compounds has a significant influence on the mass transfer efficiency. Illustrated by examples, approaches have been reviewed that can be used to obtain higher selectivity of metal ion transport across ion-exchange membranes. Practical applications in analytical procedures are also discussed.
