Abstract.

A systematic approach to the implementation of a quality management system in the teaching laboratories of higher education institutions is described, based on the experience of the Faculty of Chemistry of the University of Barcelona. The main planning issues (definition of the aims and scope of the project, adoption of a model and of the appropriate strategy, leadership and adherence of personnel) are dealt with. Implementation (launching of the steering group and the quality assurance unit, definition of the processes and of the organisational structure) is discussed, and quality measurement activities are described.
