Abstract
A226-type as-cast alloys are considered to be the most popular types in the as-cast Al-Si-Cu alloys owing to their excellent combination of castability in different processes, such as sand- and permanent mold casting, high strength to weight ratio, low thermal expansion coefficient, good corrosion resistance as well as the suitable mechanical properties at elevated temperature [1–5]. They are widely used for different critical cast parts in the automotive industry, such as the pistons, engine head and block as well as the gear box, which work under high mechanical and thermal cyclic stresses. The use of high performance shaped as-cast Al-Si-Cu alloys under different service conditions, such as repeated cyclic loading, has led to appreciable interest in their fatigue behavior and investigation of damage mechanisms in these alloys. It is necessary to further understand the micro-mechanisms of fracture behavior of this alloy due to their fatigue crack initiation, propagation, and final failure zone, which can facilitate the development of micromechanical fatigue models in predicting the fatigue lives of as-cast Al-Si-Cu cast alloys.
