  2. Two French mathematicians were born in eighteenth-century Saint-Domingue [31]. One was Louis Lefébure de Fourcy (1787–1869), who was one of the examiners on the panel of three who decided in 1828 that Galois should not be admitted to the École Polytechnique, and Budan de Boislaurent (1761–1840), an amateur mathematician who published ten articles.

  3. French in Haiti has historically been the language of instruction and communication in legal, administrative, and governmental affairs, although “the overwhelming majority of Haitians (95%–97% in 1804 and 85%–90% today) speak only Creole, a separate and distinct tongue—and not French ...” [36, p. 38].

Le l’en remercie du plus profond de mois-même [22, pp. v–vi].
