Abstract
We consider solutions to the generalized Surface Quasi-geostrophic equation (\(\gamma \)-SQG) when the velocity is more singular than the active scalar function (i.e. \(\gamma \in (0,1)\)). In this paper we establish strong ill-posedness in \(C^{k,\beta }\) (\(k\ge 1\), \(\beta \in (0,1]\) and \(k+\beta >1+\gamma \)) and we also construct solutions in \(\mathbb {R}^2\) that initially are in \(C^{k,\beta }\cap L^2\) but are not in \(C^{k,\beta }\) for \(t>0\). Furthermore these solutions stay in \(H^{k+\beta +1-2\delta }\) for some small \(\delta \) and an arbitrarily long time.

1 Introduction
In this paper we consider a family of active scalars in two dimensions, that are driven by an incompressible flow which is more singular than the scalar itself. More precisely, we say a function \(w(x,t):\mathbb {R}^2\times \mathbb {R}_+\rightarrow \mathbb {R}\), \(w(x,t)\in H^{s}\), \(s>2+\gamma \) is a solution to the generalized Surface Quasi-geostrophic equation (\(\gamma \)-SQG equation) with initial conditions \(w(x,0)=w_{0}(x)\) if the equation
is fulfilled for every \(x\in \mathbb {R}^2\), with \(v=(v_{1,\gamma },v_{2,\gamma })\) defined by

This family of equations becomes the 2D incompressible Euler equations and the SQG equation (see [9, 11] and [10]) when \(\gamma =-1,0\) respectively. For the entire range \(\gamma \in (-1,1)\), it has been shown in [10] that this system is locally well-possed in \(H^{s}\) for \(s>2+\gamma \). In [8] the authors proved local existence in the critical Sobolev space \(H^2\) for a logarithmic inviscid regularization of SQG (see also [18] for the \(\gamma \)-SQG case). Regarding \(H^s\) norm growth see [19] where the authors show that there exists initial conditions with arbitrarily small \(H^{s}\) norm (\(s\ge 11\)) that become large after a long period of time. Finite time formation of singularities for initial data in \(H^{s}\) for \(s>2+\gamma \) remains an open problem for the range \(\gamma \in (-1,1)\). On the other hand, there are a few rigorous constructions of non-trivial global solutions in \(H^s\) (for some s satisfying \(s> 2+\gamma \)) in [6, 7, 15] and [2].
For both 2D Euler and SQG, the critical Sobolev space has been studied in [3, 12, 13] and [17], where it has been established non-existence of uniformly bounded solutions in \(H^{2+\gamma }\) (see also [20] and [21] for other ill-posedness results for active scalars). Furthermore, for \(\gamma =0\), in a range of supercritical Sobolev spaces (\(s\in (\frac{3}{2},2)\)) non-existence of solutions in \(H^{s}\) is proved in [12].
Global existence of solutions in \(L^2\) has already been obtained for SQG in [23] (see [10], for an extension in the case \(\gamma \in (0,1)\)), but uniqueness is not known and in fact there is non uniqueness of solutions for \(\Lambda ^{-1}w\in C_t^{\sigma }C_x^{\beta }\) with \(\frac{1}{2}<\beta <\frac{4}{5}\) and \(\sigma < \frac{\beta }{2-\beta }\) (see [5]).
Local well-posedness in \(C^{k,\beta }\cap L^{q}\) (\(k\ge 1\), \(\beta \in (0,1)\), \(q>1\)) was established for SQG in [24], and recently the result was improved in [1], where the requirement \(w\in L^{q}\) has been dropped. The same result as in [24] applies for the range \(\gamma \in [-1,0)\) for \(\beta \in [0,1]\) (for the a priori estimates see [9]). Nevertheless, as shown in [12] for \(\gamma =0\), there is no local existence result when \(\beta =0,1\) (in the case of 2D Euler equations see [4] and [14] for a proof of strong ill-posedness and non-existence of uniformly bounded solutions for the velocity v in \(C^k\)).
Global in time exponential growth of solutions was obtained in [16] for the range \(\gamma \in (-1,1)\) in \(C^{1,\beta }\), with \(\beta \in [f(\gamma ),1]\).
1.1 Main results
The aim of this paper is to prove strong ill-posedness in \(C^{k,\beta }\) (\(k\ge 1\), \(\beta \in (0,1]\) and \(k+\beta >1+\gamma \)) of the \(\gamma \)-SQG equation for the range \(\gamma \in (0,1)\). We also construct solutions in \(\mathbb {R}^2\) of \(\gamma \)-SQG that initially are in \(C^{k,\beta }\cap L^2\) but are not in \(C^{k,\beta }\) for \(t>0\).

(Non-existence) Given k a natural number, \(\beta \in (0,1]\), \(\gamma \in (0,1)\) and \(\delta \in (0,\frac{1}{2})\) with \(k+\beta -2\delta > 1+\gamma \), then for any T and \(\epsilon >0\), there exists a \(H^{k+\beta +1-\frac{3}{2}\delta }\) function w(x, 0) such that \(||w(x,0)||_{C^{k,\beta }}\le \epsilon \) and that the only solution to (1) in \(H^{k+\beta +1-\frac{3}{2} \delta }\) with initial condition w(x, 0) exists for \(t\in [0,T]\) and fulfills that, for \(t\in (0,T]\), \(||w(x,t)||_{C^{k,\beta }}=\infty .\)
Remark 1
Although technically we do not prove the results for the case \(\beta =0\), the results in \(C^{k,1}\) actually give us strong ill-posedness and non-existence in the space \(C^{k+1}\).

Both theorems are not true for the critical case \(\gamma =0\), for more details see [24].
1.2 Strategy of the proof
To obtain the ill-posedness result, we first focus on finding a pseudo-solution \(\bar{w}\) for \(\gamma -SQG\) that exhibits the behaviour we would like to show, mainly that it has a small \(C^{k,\beta }\) norm initially and this norm grows a lot in a very short period of time. We say that \(\bar{w}\) is a pseudo-solution if it fulfills an evolution equation of the form

This, of course, is not a very restrictive definition, but in general we will only use this definition for \(\bar{w}\) when F is small in a relevant norm. Once we have a pseudo-solution \(\bar{w}\) with the desired behaviour, if F is small and both F and \(\bar{w}\) are regular enough, then \(\bar{w}\approx w\), with w the solution to (1) with the same initial conditions as \(\bar{w}\), and therefore w shows the same fast growth as \(\bar{w}\).
The details about how to find a pseudo-solution with the desired behaviour are somewhat technical, but the rough idea is to consider initial conditions that in polar coordinates have the form
that is, a radial function (which is a stationary solution to \(\gamma \)-SQG) plus a perturbation of frequency N in \(\alpha \). The evolution of \(w_{pert,N}(r,\alpha ,t):=w_{N}(r,\alpha ,t)-f(r)\) satisfies
where \(v_{r,\gamma }, v_{\alpha ,\gamma }\) are the radial and angular components of the velocity respectively.
For very big N, a careful study of the velocity operator \(v_{\gamma }\) shows that, if we consider \(w_{pert,N}(r,\alpha )=f_{N}(r,\alpha )\sum _{j\in S}\sin (Nj\alpha +\alpha _{0})\) ( with \(S\subset \mathbb {N}\) a finite set) where \(f_{N}(r,\alpha )\) is a smooth function supported around \(r=1\) (with some extra properties that depend on N), then

It should be noted that, although similar properties for the velocity are obtained in [12] for the SQG equation, the fact that the velocity kernel is more singular in the case of \(\gamma -SQG\) (\(\gamma >0\)) makes these properties considerably harder to achieve. In particular, the increased singularity of the kernel and the necessity of interpreting the integral for the velocity operator in the principal value sense make the use of polar coordinates significantly more challenging.
The approximations (4) and (5) can be made precise and, for the right choice of \(f_{N}\), hold in spaces \(H^{2+\gamma +\epsilon }\) with some (possibly small) \(\epsilon >0\). Since \(\gamma -SQG\) is well-posed in \(H^{2+\gamma +\epsilon }\), this suggests that we can apply these approximations in (3) to obtain
and then use \(\bar{w}=f(r)+\tilde{w}\) as our pseudo-solution. Equation (6) does not change the structure of \(\tilde{w}\) in a significant way, so in particular we expect that
will hold for some long period of time. We can then use (7) and (8) to show that \(\bar{w}\) solves (2) with F small in \(H^{2+\gamma -\epsilon }\).
The system (6) is relatively simple to study, since it is linear and one dimensional in nature, and given initial conditions the solutions can be written explicitly.
Obtaining a pseudo-solution that grows arbitrarily fast in \(C^{k,\beta }\) is not straightforward, since equation (6) has several properties that make infinite growth more difficult, including the conservation of the \(L^2\) norm for any value of r or the local well-posedness in \(H^{2+\gamma +\epsilon }\). it is tempting to consider, for example, a solution such that
for very large N and M, and then go backwards in time. This \(\tilde{w}\) would then have a very large \(C^{k,\beta }\) norm at time \(t=\epsilon \), when all the different frequencies are, in some sense, in constructive interference. For times different from \(t=\epsilon \), we then would expect that, since different Fourier modes travel at different velocities, this constructive interference disappears and the \(C^{k,\beta }\) decreases very fast. The problem with this approach is that, although \(\tilde{w}(x,t)\) is an explicit solution in time, it is very hard to obtain useful information about it, and in particular it looks quite challenging to obtain useful upper bounds for the \(C^{k,\beta }\) norm when \(t=0\).
To circumvent this, we instead consider a solution that is formed by several wave-packets, each one of the form
where \(M,\alpha _{1}\) and \(\alpha _{2}\) will depend on the wave-packet. If we choose L, N and M appropriately, these wave-packets evolve in a relatively simple way, where we mostly see some change in time of \(\alpha _{1}\) and \(\alpha _{2}\). This, combined with the fact that the wave packets have some good localization properties, allow us to find solutions where all the wave-packets are in constructive interference at time \(t=\epsilon \), but such that for \(t=0\) the peaks of different wave-packets are far from each other, and therefore the \(C^{k,\beta }\) is much smaller.
Once ill-posedness is proved, to obtain non-existence, we consider an infinite number of fast growing solutions, and spread them through the plane so that the interactions between them become very small.
1.2.1 Comparison with SQG
In the case of SQG (\(\gamma =0\)) the velocities are the Riesz transforms which yields, for very large N,
with C being a non-zero constant and \(v_{r,\gamma =0}\) is the radial component of the velocity of SQG. This suggests that the mechanism for growth can be led by the following simplified equation for the pseudo-solution \(\bar{w}=f(r)+\tilde{w}\)
where \(v_{\alpha ,\gamma =0}\) is the angular component of the velocity of SQG. Consequently, the growth can be achieved in \(C^k\) but not in \(C^{k, \beta }\) for \(\beta \in (0,1)\).
For \(\gamma \in (0,1)\) the kernel from the velocity is more singular, which makes the task challenging to obtain results close to the critical regularity \(C^{1, \beta }\). To address this, it is necessary to consider a more general ansatz than in [12] for \(\gamma =0\), which provides us with pseudo-solutions having less structure (they are not m-fold symmetric), thereby making it quite difficult to work in polar coordinates to obtain the desired estimates.
1.3 Outline of the paper
The paper is organized as follows. In Sect. 2, we set the notation used through the paper. In Sect. 3, we obtain estimates on the velocity in the radial and angular directions. In Sect. 4, we introduce the pseudo-solutions with the desired properties and establish the necessary estimates on the source term F(x, t). Finally in Sect. 5, we prove strong ill-posedness and non-existence for the space \(C^{k,\beta }\).
2 Preliminaries and Notation
2.1 Polar coordinates
Many of our computations and functions become much simpler if we use polar coordinates, so we need to establish some notation in that regard. For the rest of this subsection, we will refer to
the map from polar to cartesian coordinates. Note that the choice of \([0,2\pi )\) for the variable \(\alpha \) is arbitrary and any interval of the form \([c,2\pi +c)\) would also work, and in fact we will sometimes consider intervals different from \([0,2\pi )\). These changes in the domain will not be specifically mentioned since they will be clear by context.

It is unclear (and in fact, untrue) whether these properties translate to the operators \(v_{r,\gamma }\) and \(v_{\alpha ,\gamma }\) that give us the velocity in the radial and polar direction respectively. We can obtain, however, similar properties for these operators.

3 Bounds for the Velocity
Since we will work in polar coordinates, it will be necessary to obtain expressions for the velocity in the radial and angular direction. These expressions are, assuming w(x) is a \(C^1\) function with compact support,
These expressions, however, hide some cancellation of the kernel when we are far from the support of w. Therefore, given a \(C^1\) function w with support in \(B_{\lambda }(R\cos (A),R\sin (A))\), \(\frac{3}{2}>R>\frac{1}{2}\), \(\lambda \le \frac{1}{100}\) we will use the expressions

Although the expression for \(B^{pol}_{4\lambda }(r,\alpha )\) is not simple, it will be enough for our computations to use the properties we obtained in Sect. 2.1.
We are particularly interested in obtaining the velocity produced by w with support very concentrated around some point far from \(r=0\) (say \(r=1\) for simplicity), and for this we start with the following technical lemma.
Lemma 3.1
Given \(\lambda \le \frac{1}{100},\) and a \(C^1\) function w(x) with \(\text {supp}(w)\subset B_{\lambda }(\cos (c), \sin (c))\), \(c\in \mathbb {R}\), we have that if \((r,\alpha )\in B_{2\lambda }(\cos (c),\sin (c))\) then

The result can be extended to functions with support concentrated around a point \((r,\alpha )\) with \(r\ne 0\), although then the constant will depend on the specific value of r.

4 Pseudo-Solutions Considered and their Properties
To obtain ill-posedness for the space \(C^{k,\beta }\) for \(\gamma \)-SQG, we will add perturbations to a radial solution \(f_{1}(r)\) (with \(f_{1}(r)\) chosen so that it has some specific properties). These perturbations will be of the form

The specific role of the different parameters in this construction will be discussed in more detail at the beginning of Sect. 4.2. For compactness of notation, whenever we have \(f,\delta ,N,L,M,\lambda \) satisfying these properties we will say that they satisfy the usual conditions. From now on we will consider k, \(\beta \), \(\gamma \) and \(\delta \) fixed satisfying these properties, just so that we can avoid extra sub-indexes for these parameters. Due to this, one needs to keep in mind that in general the constants in the lemmas obtained might depend on the specific values of k, \(\beta \), \(\gamma \) and \(\delta \). Before we study how this kind of perturbations will evolve with time, we start by obtaining some basic properties regarding the norms of (24).
4.1 Bounds for the initial conditions
In order to show strong ill-posedness, we need that our initial conditions are small in the desired norm, in this case \(C^{k,\beta }\). For this, we will now obtain several technical lemmas that will allow us later on to show this smallness in \(C^{k,\beta }\). We start by studying the derivatives of functions as in (24).
Lemma 4.1
Given a perturbation as in (24), which we will refer as \(w_{k,\beta }\), with \(f,\delta ,N,L,M,\lambda \) satisfying the usual conditions we have that

Note that Lemma 4.1, apart from giving some bounds for the \(C^{j}\) norm of our perturbations, it also tells us that these perturbations behave similarly to wave packets, with their amplitude and derivatives decreasing as one gets further from \(\alpha ^{1}+j\frac{2\pi }{N}\). We will use this property to obtain upper bounds for the norms of these perturbations when several of them are placed appropriately far way from each other.
For this, we first need a short interpolation lemma.

As before, to avoid extra sub-indexes we consider \(k,\beta ,\delta \) and \(\gamma \) to be fixed, but all the results will apply as long as they fulfillthe restrictions mentioned. The constants appearing in the lemmas might depend on \(k,\beta ,\delta \) and \(\gamma \) but the final results will not.
Each parameter \(\lambda ,N,M,J,L,\tilde{t}\) fulfills a specific purpose in the construction, although on first sight this purpose might not be evident:

\(\lambda \) gives us the size of the perturbation that we add to our radial function, and in particular we will require \(\lambda \) to be small so that our initial conditions are small in \(C^{k,\beta }\). Note that, if we focus on the non radial part of our initial conditions, the \(C^{k,\beta }\) is non-increasing as a function of the parameters N, M, J, L and it does not depend on \(\tilde{t}\) at all.

\(\tilde{t}\) just gives the time when our solution will become big. This parameter could be omited if we were only interested in strong ill-posedness, but it is important for our non-existence result 5.2 since we want to construct a solution that looses regularity for a full interval of time, and for this we require some information about when different solutions are becoming big.

The parameter N multiplies all the frequencies in our perturbations, giving, in some sense, the periodicity of the perturbations. N ensures that the approximations for the velocity are valid: Fixed all the other parameters, the bounds obtained in Sect. 3 require that N is big enough. For this reason, this will be the last parameter we will fix: After all the other parameters have been chosen, we will take N big enough so that our pseudo-solution is a good approximation of the actual solution to \(\gamma -SQG\). Furthermore, the radial part of our pseudo-solutions becomes small as N tends to infinity, which is important for the smallness of our initial conditions.

J gives us the number of wave-packets in our construction, and is the parameter that will give us growth. Roughly speaking, at \(t=0\) we will have J wave packets far from each other, and at time \(t=\tilde{t}\) this wave-packets are all localized around the same point and in constructive interference, so that we expect that our pseudo-solution has become J times bigger.

L Gives us the number of frequencies in each individual wave packet. A bigger number of frequencies will result in a more localized wave packets and therefore as J becomes big we will also require a bigger value of L to ensure spatial separation at \(t=0\).

Finally, M gives us the range of frequencies from our wave packets: The frequencies of the wave packets range from range from \(N\frac{M}{2}\) to NM. More precisely, the individual modes that compose a wave packet have frequency \(N(M_{j}+l)\), with \(M_{j}\in [\frac{M}{2},M]\) and \(l\in 0,1,\ldots ,L-1\). For the construction to work, we require that \(NM_{j}\) is a good approximation of the average frequency of the wave packet, and therefore we need \(M_{j}\ge \frac{M}{2}>>L\). Note that taking M big is not equivalent to taking N big, even though both parameters are increasing the frequencies appearing in the construction.
However it is not immediately obvious whether the conditions we impose over \(f_{1,\gamma }\) are too restrictive, so we need the following lemma to assure us that a \(f_{1,\gamma }\) with the desired properties exists.

The preceding lemma shows that our pseudo-solutions do have a big norm at time \(\tilde{t}\). While this suffices to establish ill-posedness, our objective for proving non-existence demands the construction of solutions with infinitely large \(C^{k,\beta }\) norms for a certain period of time. To achieve this, we must obtain specific bounds about how fast our solution can change their \(C^{k,\beta }\)norm.

4.4 Estimates for the solution
We are now ready to obtain properties for the solution itself, by first showing that solution and pseudo-solution are similar in certain Sobolev spaces, and then combining this with the information from our pseudo-solutions. It should be noted that in Theorem 4.9, we also show that the desired properties hold when considering a solution that is getting slightly moved by some external velocity. This is done so that the gluing process, where we combine an infinite number of rapidly growing solutions, can be done in a more straightforward way.
Lemma 4.8

For the \(L^{2}\) norm, we can use incompressibility to obtain
To bound the integral term with \(v_{\gamma }(W)\) we need to use two important properties that will also be key when working with the \(H^{k+\beta +1-\delta }\) bounds. First, as in [10], using that, for an odd operator A (which in our case will be \(v_{1,\gamma }\) and \(v_{2,\gamma }\)) we have

The proof of the inequality for \(H^{k+\beta +1-\delta }\) is very similar to that of Lemmas 2.9 and 3.8 in [12], so we will skip most of the details and focus on the few differences for the sake of briefness. The idea is to use that

Most of these terms can be bounded directly by \(C||W||^2_{H^{s}}\) using the properties of \(v_{\gamma }\), \(\Lambda ^{s,\textbf{c}}\), and \(\bar{w}_{\lambda ,N,M,J,L,\tilde{t}}\) plus the assumptions for W (including the \(L^2\) growth) and the interpolation inequality for Sobolev spaces.
A few terms, however, requires more careful consideration (and it also needs to be treated differently compared to the proofs in [12]), namely, for \(i=1,2\)
since \(||\Lambda ^{s}(v_{\gamma }(W)||\) cannot by bounded by \(||W||_{H^{s}}\). We will just focus on (28) since the other term is done in exactly the same way. Here, we need to again act as in the \(L^2\) case, rewriting (28) as

We first fix some parameters so the pseudo-solutions \({\bar{w}}_{\lambda ,N,M,J,L,\tilde{t}}\) have some desirable properties. We fix \(\tilde{t}=t_{crit}\) so that, by Lemma 4.6 we have

5 Strong Ill-posedness and Non-existence of Solutions
We are now ready to prove ill-posedness and non-existence of solutions. As mentioned in Sect. 4, these results hold for \(k\in \mathbb {N}\), \(\beta \in (0,1]\), \(\gamma \in (0,1)\) with \(k+\beta > 1+\gamma \) and \(\delta \) is some constant \(\delta \in (0,\frac{1}{2})\) such that \(k+\beta +2 \delta > 1+\gamma \).
Theorem 5.1
Given \(T,t_{crit,}\epsilon _{1},\epsilon _{2}>0\), there exist a function w(x, 0) such that \(||w(x,0)||_{C^{k,\beta }}\le \epsilon _{1}\) and the only solution to (1) in \(H^{k+\beta +1- \delta }\) with initial conditions w(x, 0) exists for \(t\in [0,T]\) and fulfills that

Proof
To obtain initial conditions with the desired properties, we will consider initial conditions of the form

First, fixed j, we will restrict to choices for \(w_{i,j}\) such that they are initial conditions given by Theorem 4.9 with \(\frac{1}{\epsilon _{2}}=j\), \(\epsilon _{1}=\epsilon \) and \(T=t_{0}\). Then if we choose some \(t_{crit}=t_{crit,i,j}\) and we call \(\tilde{w}_{i,j}\) a solution to (27) with the initial conditions given by \(w_{i,j}(x)\) and an appropriate \(v_{ext}\) fulfilling \(||v_{ext}||_{C^{k+2}}\le C_{i,j}\), we would then have that for \(t\in [t_{crit,i,j}-Ct_{crit,i,j},t_{crit,i,j}]\)
