Abstract
The original transient thermal model of transformers with ONAN cooling was developed in a previous work by the authors. The parameters of the model are determined from inexpensive measurements in the short-circuit heating experiment. Two problems exist in the on-line application of the model: unknown starting hot-spot temperature and variation in the thermal parameters in a long-term transformer operation. Both are discussed in this paper, and the solution through the application of a thermal observer is also discussed.
