Instability of a poppet valve: interaction of axial vibration and lateral vibration

Abstract

The dynamics of axial vibration and lateral vibration coexisting in a poppet valve were studied. It is found that the axial movement affects the lateral movement of the poppet via three ways, including the axial displacement, the valve chamber pressure as well as collisions between the poppet and the valve seat. However, the impact of the lateral vibration on the axial one is only by means of collisions between the poppet and the valve seat. The influenced lateral or axial vibration undergoes a transition and sometimes changes from a damped vibration to a chaotic vibration.
