Abstract
This article highlights the normal eating behavior in early childhood and the influencing factors from a developmental pediatric perspective and the origins of eating or feeding disorders from a child psychiatric viewpoint. Knowlegde about eating behavior of children is important for counseling families in pediatric practice. The development of eating behavior is influenced by individual self-regulatory capacities of the child and linked to the stages of autonomy development in the first years of life. The outcome of eating disorders and dysfunctional interactions between parent and child may be favorable if addressed early by professional help. The treatment of complex disorders in eating behavior requires the interdisciplinary cooperation of different healthcare professionals.
