Abstract
The weathering of hair is known to result in damage of the fibre at the ultrastructural level. Therefore, the stability of drug concentrations was investigated in clipped hair from drug abusers by exposing the hair bundles to sunlight, rain and wind during 3 months in summer. There was a considerable decrease in morphine and 6-acetylmorphine concentrations while only small changes in cocaine and benzoylecgonine concentrations were observed. Dihydrocodeine levels increased especially after exposure to sunlight. The findings seemed to depend not only on the stability of a particular drug substance subjected to wash-out effects, hydrolysis and oxidation. Due to the deleterious influence of UV light and water on the hair pigment, access to previously inaccessible domains is assumed to be faciliated resulting in a better recovery of drugs with a high melanin affinity.
