Abstract

An established medical sex education program at the University of Minnesota Medical School was revised to increase the “student as learner” concept of education. Specific knowledge skill and attitude objectives were clearly stated. The course and its evaluation were derived from these specific objectives. Positive student reaction to this lectureless course generated from written knowledge expectation, sex history taking sessions, audio-visual patient management problems and video-tape clinically oriented programs which could be viewed at a time convenient to the student. Students were encouraged to plan their own “free university” sessions with faculty assistance. The format lends itself to individualized instruction with clearly stated faculty expectations.
