Abstract
This study explores the impact of the child’s concept of word on early reading acquisition. We recorded the pre-reading skills of 91 children at the beginning and the end of their last kindergarten year, using different measures of the concept of word. Reading achievement was assessed at the end of first and second grade. The results show that the concept of word is a significant and independent predictor of reading achievement. Four pre-reading skills–alphabetic principle, concept of word, rapid automatized naming, and working memory–predict 50 % of reading achievement at the end of the first grade in school.
In order to further understand early reading acquisition, we use our data to compare the statistical fit of two developmental models which differ in the sequence of concept of word and letter knowledge. Our sample supports the view that the development of a concept of word precedes the acquisition of letter knowledge. Together, concept of word and letter knowledge predict 75 % of »beginning consonant spelling«, the strongest predictor of later reading achievement.
