Conclusion

It may be that an understanding of the development of a liquid phase from the disordered silica upon the surface of new sand grains and the development of the liquid transition phase from crystalline quartz will lead to improved operation in acid open hearth furnaces. The existence of such liquid phase appears to have a relation to the formation of gas cavities in steel castings and possibly contributes to the phenomenon called metal penetration.
