Abstract
As result of the ongoing digitization of television (TV), incumbent TV broadcasters of the analogue age face intensified competition. At the same time, demand of viewers changes and gets more fragmented. Thereby, incumbent TV broadcasters lose their position as intermediates between TV content producers and viewers. This paper uses the resourcebased view to analyze the role of broadcasting rights as usage rights of media content in the digital age. It asks how digitization influences the significance of broadcasting rights as core resource of TV broadcasters. The results indicate that broadcasting rights still generate competitive advantage, but that its sustainability is hampered by the possibilities to duplicate the resource by own production or by the broadcasting rights of other producers.
