Abstract
Dispersion hardened alloys of Pt and Au containing ThO2 and Al2O2 were made and tested. These alloys were made by precipitating the elements from a solution containing a suspension of the oxide phase. The precipitate deposited on the oxide particles, and produced dispersions of good homogeneity. Alloys containing less than 2 vol. % oxide phase had sufficient ductility to permit fabrication of the wire. Mechanical properties and electrical resistivities were measured as a function of temperature up to 1000°C. The dispersion strengthening caused only a few percent increase in the resistivity of the alloy compared to the resistivity of the metal.
