Abstract

Titanium exhibits two different types of stress-corrosion failure in organic liquids: (1) intergranular failure, which occurs both in pure and alloyed titanium, and (2) transgranular failure, which is restricted to certain alloys. The mechanism of inter-granular failure involves localized anodic dissolution, and failure can be prevented by the addition of inhibitors (such as water) and, for alpha alloys, by cathodic polarization. However, cathodic polarization may not prevent failure in alpha + beta alloys and is not, therefore, recommended as a preventive procedure. The mechanism of transgranular failure remains to be established, but it is known that certain chemical inhibitors can prevent its occurrence, and further work in this area is strongly recommended. On the basis of present knowledge, this type of failure can be controlled effectively by controlling the composition, microstructure, and preferred orientation of the alloy.
