Abstract
We assess the current role of tenure in academic health centers in this paper and present the current state of the discussion on the uses, abuses, present role, and short comings of academic tenure as it currently exists. We propose and discuss the proposition that all academics should be tenure eligible and that various pathways to tenure be based on achievements and contributions evaluated by institutional promotions committees. We also comment on the financial implications of universal tenure eligibility.
