Summary
Purpose
To use the advantage of a small incision in phacoemulsification foldable intraocular lenses may be implanted. The aim of the study was to evaluate the behaviour of a foldable silicone plate-haptic intraocular lens in patients with myopia in particular.
Patients and method: We operated 12 eyes of patients with cataract and myopia by phacoemulsification and implanted a silicone plate-haptic intraocular lens.
The diameter of the lens was 10.5 mm and the dioptric power ranged between 19 and 11 diopters. All lenses were placed in a 12–6 o’clock position and this position was controlled on the first postoperative day and after 6 months.
Results
On the first postoperative day 10 out of 12 lenses had changed their position and 2 of them showed an additional dislocation. After 6 months postoperatively there were no further rotations, but additional dislocations (in total 5 lenses) due to shrinkage of the capsule.
Conclusion
The foldable silicone plate-haptic intraocular lens with 10.5 mm in diameter cannot be recommended without reservation for implantation in patients with myopia. Maybe silicone plate-haptic lenses with a larger diameter or additional loops (haptic-anchor-plate lens) or foldable lenses in a standard design could be an alternative.
