Abstract
The meridional drift of the sunspots studied statistically byJ. Tuominen will be discussed by means of a hydromagnetic model. The earlier assumptions concerning the structure of the solar magnetic field are used and the motions of the hydromagnetic waves along the lines of force of a superposed dipole and octupole considered. A value ofh=0,3 is found for the ratio of the moment of the octupole to that of the dipole field, which is in good agreement with the previous results. Furthermore, certain heliographic latitudes (B=±16°) are found which divide motions towards the equator and towards the poles, thus a theoretical explanation ofTuominen’s results is possible.
