Transfer of electronic excitation energy in liquid solutions

  • Published:
Acta Physica Academiae Scientiarum Hungaricae

Abstract

Absorption and fluorescence spectra and the relative quantum yields of fluorescence of solutions of fluorescein, eosin, erythrosin and acriflavine in various solvents were studied. It is shown that the effect of solvent on the quantum yield of fluorescence of a dye may be explained by considering the changes brought about in the relative positions of, and hence in the interactions between, the lowestππ * andππ * singlets and triplets. The experimental results also yield certain conclusions regarding the direction in which the dipole moments of the studied molecules change with excitation.
