Indien iemand met de klacht misselijkheid en/of braken bij de huisarts komt, is de anamnese in combinatie met de leeftijd en de voorgeschiedenis meestal voldoende om een waarschijnlijkheidsdiagnose te stellen. Lichamelijk onderzoek beperkt zich meestal tot de buik en levert weinig extra informatie op. Aanvullend

onderzoek wordt alleen verricht op indicatie afhankelijk van de waarschijnlijkheidsdiagnose. Ernstige aandoeningen als oorzaak zijn uiterst onwaarschijnlijk indien geen andere (alarmerende) klachten aanwezig zijn.

Het is opvallend dat er bij klachten als misselijkheid en braken, die zo vaak voorkomen, zo weinig bekend is over de voorspellende waarde van de anamnese en het lichamelijk onderzoek met betrekking tot de verschillende diagnosen.
