Summary
Usefulness of the CCQ and MPVC in screening for anxiety and depression in COPD
COPD is associated with high rates of depression and anxiety, which are negatively related to quality of life, and can lead to increased morbidity. Recently, the clinical COPD questionnaire (CCQ) was developed, which claims to measure symptoms, functional and mental status. This study evaluates the CCQ as a screening tool for anxiety and depression. The CCQ is compared with the MPVC, and the SCL-90, which we used as the ‘golden standard. Seventy-six patients with mild to serious COPD (Gold 2-4), who enrolled in the COPD revalidation programme in our hospital completed the three questionnaires. Statistical analyses showed that the CCQ-scales and the MPVC-scales cannot be used as substitutes for anxiety and depression as measured with the SCL-90. We recommend the use of general psychological questionnaires which are studied in the hospital population instead of the disease-specific CCQ or MPVC.
