Augmentatie van antidepressiva: mogelijkheden voor verbeterde werkzaamheid?

Abstract

Antidepressiva zijn niet meer weg te denken uit de huidige maatschappij en worden op grote schaal voor verschillende indicaties voorgeschreven, maar hun werkzaamheid is zeker niet optimaal. Tot op heden vindt nog steeds maar slechts 60% tot 70% van mensen die antidepressiva krijgen voorgeschreven hier baat bij. Bovendien worden met antidepressiva maar marginaal betere effecten behaald dan met placebo's (Kirsch et al., 2002), het placebo-effect in deze groep geneesmiddelen is dus heel erg groot. Een ander lastig probleem van behandeling met antidepressiva is de late therapeutische respons: het duurt vaak enkele weken voordat het antidepressivum goed werkt. Omdat een nieuwe doorbraak op dit gebied voorlopig niet te verwachten is, lijkt het versterken van de werking (augmentatie) van de reeds bestaande antidepressiva uitkomst te bieden.
