Seksuele bijwerkingen van antipsychotica

Abstract

Hulpverleners moeten aandacht schenken aan de seksuele bijwerkingen van farmaca omdat deze een belangrijke invloed hebben op de levenskwaliteit en de therapietrouw van de patiënten. Antipsychotica* (* = zie uitleg aan het einde van het artikel) interfereren met neurotransmittersystemen* en hormonale afscheidingen en kunnen op die manier het seksuele functioneren van de patiënten beïnvloeden.1 Vooral bij thioridazine en andere laag-potente* antipsychotica zal een groot deel van de patiënten seksuele bijwerkingen ontwikkelen. Deze zijn dosisafhankelijk en blijven aanwezig gedurende de volledige behandelingsduur. Het verminderen van de dosis antipsychotica en eventuele anticholinergica* of het overschakelen naar een ander middel, bij voorkeur uit de nieuwere ‘atypische’ antipsychotica, is te verkiezen boven het gebruik van farmaca om de seksuele bijwerkingen te verbeteren.
