Samenvatting
In het sonnet waarvan de aanhef Ik ben een God in 't diepst van mijn gedachten overbekend is geworden, heeft Kloos, vele jaren voordat Freud (1914) zijn traktaat ‘Zur Einführung des Narzissmus’ publiceerde, kernaspecten van narcisme, met name de afweerfunctie ervan, tot uitdrukking gebracht. Hij deed dat op een wijze die voor psychotherapeuten ook nu nog een inzichtgevende ervaring kan zijn. In de eerste strofe is het verheerlijkte zelf (grandiose Self) ongebreideld aan het woord, maar in het tweede couplet blijkt het te worden belaagd door tomeloze krachten. Dat blijken in het derde couplet de belevingen van het verachte zelf (despised Self) te zijn. De laatste strofe verwoordt hoe de liefde dit zelf dat in een verheerlijkt en veracht deel gesplitst is, zou helen, ware het dat deze oplossing méér was dan een onvervulbare droom.

The craving god. A psychodynamic interpretation of a sonnet by Willem Kloos
Approximately 35 years before Freud (1914) published ‘On narcissism: an introduction’, the Dutch poet Willem Kloos expressed in the sonnet under consideration essential aspects of narcissism - especially its defensive function - in a way that may provide psychotherapists with an insightful experience. In the first couplet the narrator elaborately expresses his ‘grandiose Self’, but in the second he seems to be assaulted by unbridled forces. In the third couplet these forces turn out to be the experiences of the ‘despised Self’. In the last couplet hope is expressed that love might cure the split Self - if only this solution was more than an illusion….
