‘Als een vlinder in Japan éénmaal de vleugels uitslaat, kan dat zes maanden later invloed hebben op de weersgesteldheid in Californië’ (Gleick, 1990).

Een aantal sprekers van de tweeëntwintigste internationale bijeenkomst van de Society for Psychotherapy Research (SPR) maakte gebruik van deze beeldspraak. Dat psychotherapie een ingewikkeld samenspel van verbanden is, wisten we al. Een kleinigheid kan verandering in gang zetten. Effecten zijn vaak moeilijk voorspelbaar of pas op de lange termijn merkbaar. Dat het onderzoek van psychotherapie een nog complexere onderneming is, wisten we ook. Pogingen om de ‘perfecte’ multivariate analyse uit te voeren zullen niets uithalen (Patterson, in Corsini en Wedding, 1989). De onderzoeker moet zich behelpen met een reductie van de werkelijkheid om psychotherapie te kunnen onderzoeken.

De Society for Psychotherapy Research organiseerde dit jaar haar jaarlijkse internationale conferentie in Europa.
