This study examines verbal working memory in children with mild intellectual disabilities (mid) within Baddeley’s framework (1986). Multiple assessments of working memory were administered in 50 children with mid (iq 55-85, mean age 15:03 years), 25 chronological age-matched control children (ca; mean age 15:03 years) and 25 mental age-matched control children (ma; mean age 10:10 years). The results show that the children with mid perform poorly on working memory tests when compared with ca children, while there are minimal differences compared with the performance of the ma children, although the phonological loop, which is responsible for the temporary storage of verbal information, is constrained compared with the ma children. These findings are consistent with a developmental delay account of mild intellectual disability.
Keywords: working memory, central executive, mild intellectual disabilities.
