Summary
A transmissible disease ofSolanum melongena has been found to cause considerable damage to the crop in many parts of the Madras Presidency. The general nature of the symptoms together with the absence of a visible associated organisms was suggestive of a virus being the cause of the disease. Owing to the complete suppression of the productive phase in the affected plants and the high percentage of incidence the loss is very great. The disease is found to be transmissible toDatura fastuosa, tomato, tobacco and wild brinjal,S. xanthocarpum andS. trilobatum.
The disease is not transmissible by sap inoculation but is easily transmitted by means of grafting. Two species of jassids would appear to be vectors of the disease.
