A Neutron Detection Efficiency Study For BaF2 Crystal

Summary

A simple method for measuring the efficiency of BaF2 crystal to neutrons of energy up to 11 MeV is here described. The method relies on the simultaneous detection of neutrons and gamma-rays from fission events of a252Cf source. The detection efficiency of a 5 cm thick BaF2 crystal has been measured as a function of the neutron energy and threshold on the light output, and the experimental values have been compared with the results of a GEANT-based Monte Carlo calculation.
