Designing, developing, and implementing an interactive learning system

Abstract

THIS ARTICLE describes what interactive, group driven distance learning can be and what it can produce. It provides a solution to one of the primary concerns facing distance learning today, which is to find ways to increase the amount of student involvement and thus maintain student interest in what they are learning. The learning needs of today's students are described. A significant technological part of the solution will be seen in the description of three online learner-centered delivery systems and their communication needs. The vision, goals, objectives, methodology, and results are discussed along with feedback from the participants.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR John J. Hirschbuhl is Professor of Instructional Technology and a Senior Multimedia Producer at The University of Akron where he teaches instructional design, research methods, and directs doctoral studies in instructional technologies. Dr. Hirschbuhl is the founder of the Center for Computer Based Education and Testing at the University of Akron. Formerly, he was the Director of Learning Technologies, a Consulting Scholar for the IBM Corporation, and Director of Computer Based Training for DELTAK, Inc. Dr. Hirschbuhl has published twelve editions ofComputers in Education with McGraw-Hill and over 150 articles in professional journals on instructional technology. In addition, he has consulted with many of the Fortune 500 companies as well as many academic institutions.
