Induction of normal defecation reflex by distention of the rectal stump following removal of the recto sigmoid

  • Published:
The American Journal of Digestive Diseases

Conclusions

This is a report of two cases of cancer of recto sigmoid, following Hartman’s anterior resection, whereby distention of the rectal stump with fluids resulted in evacuation of the colon through the permanent colostomy opening.

This shows in human cases, the proof of animal experimentation of the nervous spinal cord mechanism involved in initiation and control of the act of defecation.
