An abnormal mechanism for the excitation of gastric secretion in the Dog

  • Published:
The American Journal of Digestive Diseases

Summary

The hypothesis is advanced that in some instances of hypersecretory response to a meal or a hypercontinuous secretion of gastric juice, as seen in some ulcer patients and in other abnormal conditions, may be due to an elaboration of histamine by an irritated or inflamed mucosa. This hypothesis is supported by the observation that in three Pavlov-pouch-Mann-Williamson dogs, which manifested a definite hypercontinuous secretion and one of which manifested a definite hypersecretion in response to a meal, the gastric secretory mechanism reacted to atropine as though a portion of the secretory stimulus were histamine.
