Thiamine influence upon laxative action

Summary

Experiments in the rhesus monkey give no support to the assumption of a synergistic influence of Vitamin B1 upon laxative action. Daily doses from 1.0 to 100 mg./kg. thiamine hydrochloride, orally administered over periods of 2 to 17 days, did not significantly increase the effectiveness of a laxative (Phenolphthalein). The average increase in effectiveness in 25 experiments was 18 per cent with a variation of ± 17 per cent.
