Male-sterility in flax. II. A case of reciprocal crosses differing inF 2

Summary

  1. 1.

    Male-steriles first arose in theF 2 generation from procumbent x tall, in the proportion of one in four. In the reciprocal cross there were none.

  2. 2.

    It is suggested that there is a difference in the cytoplasmic constituents of the two strains, apart from the factors carried by the nucleus.

  3. 3.

    Denoting “tall” cytoplasm by ◯ “procumbent” by ▭, the original tall races are mm, the procumbent MM, mm is malesterile, while the other five possible combinations are all hermaphrodite.

  4. 4.

    Type of growth and flower colour segregate in the same way in reciprocal crosses.

  5. 5.

    The somatic number of chromosomes in both tall and procumbent is 32.
