Summary
Intravenous administration of an extract of gastric mucus inhibits the secretion of gastric acid.
Local irrigation of canine gastric pouches with Eugenol increases the secretion of gastric mucus, inhibits the histamine-stimulated secretion of acid, but has no effect on pepsin activity.
Acetylcholine has a similar but less marked effect.
Repeated applications of Eugenol do not interfere with acid production from gastric pouches.
