Summary
Normal and regenerating livers accumulate triglyceride but not phospholipid when perfusedin vitro for two hours with a constant infusion of a palmitic acid emulsion. The regenerating livers were prepared from normal livers by removing two lobes at the start of the perfusion. On a gram basis the amount of lipid accumulating was greater than that of the normal liver. A similar increase in the amount of triglyceride and phospholipid released into the perfusate was also shown. These findings support the concept that the lipid which accumulates in thein vivo regenerating liver arises from an increased flux of free fatty acids through a unit mass of liver tissue.
