The pig as an experimental animal with particular reference to cardiovascular surgery

  • Published:
Irish Journal of Medical Science (1926-1967)

Summary

The purpose of this paper was to give our opinion of the value of the pig as an experimental animal and to note features peculiar to the pig which are of interest to the experimental worker. In our experience the pig is a satisfactory animal for acute experiments. It is a suitable animal to use for the training of a team in cardiovascular by-pass surgery. It has the advantage of being inexpensive, only one animal is necessary for each experiment, donor blood is readily available from an abattoir. A 25 kilogram animal is easily transported. Allergic reaction seen following massive blood transfusion is a particular problem which can be overcome by the use of an antihistamine. A circuit which does not cause significant haemolysis in a pig experiment is safe in this respect for clinical work. A.C.D. blood may be used with safety for priming extracorporeal lines. Citrated blood must be reconstituted with calcium before commencing by-pass.
