Strategies for enhancing assessment with electronic portfolios

Abstract

THIS PAPER ADDRESSES THE ISSUES involved with the implementation of electronic portfolios on a college-wide basis. Important elements of traditional portfolio assessment, including philosophy, reliability, and validity are discussed, particularly in terms of the roles they play in an online system. Some of the complexities involved in developing and implementing a campus-wide efolio system are identified, and an open source model is proposed as a potential solution for managing much of this complexity.

Peter Adamy is an Assistant Professor of Elementary Education in the School of Education at the University of Rhode Island. His main area of research is the use of technology in teaching and assessment, with a specific focus on teacher education. He teaches methods of assessment, evaluation, and research in education. Dr. Adamy is the Director of the School of Education’s Electronic Portfolio Project, and Project Director of theirPreparing Tomorrow’s Teachers to Use Technology implementation grant.
