Plasma substance P in the irritable bowel syndrome

Summary

PATIENTS with the irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) had the same fasting and post prandial plasma immunoreactive substance P (ISP) levels as age and sex matched controls. It seems unlikely therefore that changes in plasma ISP have a role in the pathogenesis of IBS or that plasma ISP levels aid in its diagnosis.
