Summary
The addition of atebrin (2 × 10−4M to 4 × 10−4M) or of 2,4-dinitrophenol (2 × 10−4M) to the fermentation medium ofStreptomyces griseus LS-1 at the outset of cultivation resulted in a marked decrease in the biosynthesis of streptomycin. Inhibition of production of the antibiotic was partly abolished by the addition of diethylbarbituric acid (1.35 × 10−2M). The results are discussed from the aspect of the probable relation of the biosynthesis of streptomycin to the function of flavin enzymes and to phosphorylation processes, and a hypothetical explanation of the action of diethylbarbituric acid is submitted.
