Abstract
α iron wires in a dilatometer were exposed to hydrogen at partial pressures of 14.6 and 730 torr at various temperatures from 450° to 800°C. Changes in the lengths of the wires attending the changes in the surrounding gas were combined with existing solubility data to obtain values for the partial molal volume of hydrogen in α iron. Above 600°C the value determined for\(\bar V_H \) was 2.0 cu cm per mol H, independent of temperature; an apparent decrease in values below 600°C cannot be accounted for conclusively. The dilation is insensitive to microstructure.
