Meson-nucleus scattering lengths and sigma-terms

I: The π--nucleus system(*)

Il Nuovo Cimento A (1965-1970)

Summary

A «universal» linear formula for π--nucleus scattering lengths is derivedà la Fubini and Furlan from current algebra and PCAC. From its fit to data from pionic-atom, 2p−1s X-ray energy shifts we obtain the estimate (56.9±6.0) MeV on the πN sigma-term and we check the smallness of the nonstrange, average «current» quark mass.
