Ultrastructural modifications of mitochondria and rough endoplasmic reticulum of liver and spleen after a period of hypoxia

  • Published:
Virchows Archiv B

Summary

Hypoxia (5% oxygen in nitrogen at normal atmospheric pressure) produces rapid changes in the ultrastructural stability of mitochondria of spleen and liver and a narrowing of the clefts of the rough endoplasmic reticulum (ergastoplasm) of hepatocytes.

These changes are reversible. One hour after the end of a 15–20 minutes hypoxic period, the endoplasmic reticulum is, on the contrary, widened and part of the ribosomes are gathered in clusters separate from the membranes.

It is suggested that these modifications are linked with a temporary decrease in protein synthesis. A comparison is made with other ultrastructural changes produced in the liver and spleen, notably by sulfur containing radioprotective substances.
